Arlene Werner, 73, of Fortuna died peacefully in her sleep of natural causes on Thursday, Nov. 23.
Born Arlene Mace, she was adopted into the loving family of the late Walter and Lotte Beurich in Osoyoos, Canada. Arlene graduated from Southern Okanagan High School in 1959. She married the late Stefan Werner in 1959 where they lived together in Osoyoos, Canada before moving to Fortuna, Calif., in 1961.
Arlene was a prominent member of the Fortuna Lions Auxiliary, the Fortuna Lioness Club, and the Fortuna Lions Club for over 30 years. She held numerous district and club level positions, her latest being the Zone Chair for Region 1 of District 4-C2. She was a proud member of the Lions Club and it showed in all of her good works. It was her giving spirit that led to her being awarded with the 2012 Lion of the Year award. Arlene also had a love for Corvette's and was awarded a lifetime membership to the Redwood Coast Corvette Club.
Arlene was an active member of the Christ Episcopal Church and very much enjoyed the fellowship and singing in the choir. She was an avid seamstress, loved to travel, and spend time with family.
Arlene is survived by four children: Roy Werner, Peter Werner, Georg Werner (Toni), and Stefanie Ambrosini (Ray), sister Lisa Beurich, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Werner and Lenka Werner, and Marty Van Zandt with whom she found love again. She is also survived by several grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Northcoast Lions Eye Foundation, PO Box 335, Eureka, Calif., 95502-0335.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., at the Christ Episcopal Church in Eureka on 15th and H Streets and a Celebration of Life service will follow at 2:00 p.m., at the Fortuna Fireman's Hall.
