Betty Hampton Obituary

BETTY JEAN STEET HAMPTON died at her home in Fortuna, California and ran into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, March 23, 2015. Betty was born on March 5, 1933 in Oakland, California and was raised by Bert and Lucy Steet. At only 5'-3" in height, she was a "powerhouse" an energetic and able woman well-known for her generosity and tenderheartedness. Betty graduated from Acalanes Union High School in Contra Costa County, California in 1950. She married Edward Hampton in 1960. In 1967, years after Lucy Steet's death, her father Bert married Eleanor Ahlf. As an adult, Betty became acquainted with her siblings Laura Mefford (Lenon), Marian Codeiro (Eddie), Allan Freeman, and Ila Murphy (Paul) and her cousin Ralph Anderson, as well as her birth mother Viola Freeman, and was able to build relationships with them. Betty worked in the construction industry most of her life as a bookkeeper, maintaining order not only at work but also at home. Betty's sons recall being locked out of the house on Saturday mornings when mom was cleaning. In 1992, Betty married Raymond Brown and enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and coastal living. She also enjoyed crafting and sharing her creations with others. Her husband Ray passed away in 2004. During her life, Betty lived in numerous places throughout northern California and Oregon. Betty's zest for life was insatiable and infectious: from driving race cars, vacationing in Thailand, taking a cruise to Alaska with her friend Lori, or taking a road trip with her friend Paula. She was always "on the go." She also enjoyed her time as a member of the Los Amegos Civic Club of Loleta, California. Known for her "Yorkie Pudding," artichokes, abaloneyou could always count on Betty to feed you (and feed you well). Her love and concern for others will be what most people remember about Betty; but most of all, her award-winning homemade jams and jellies were coveted by all who had the opportunity to taste them! She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family: three sons and their spouses: Jay Hampton (Teri), Jess Hampton (Toni), and Josh Hampton (Julie); four grandchildren: Juliann Requilman, Jason Hampton, Jacob Hampton, and Jordan Hampton; and a great-grandson Christopher Requilman. Betty's family would like to extend a special thank you to her "adopted daughter" Lori Powell, and good friend Paula Riley for always being there for and with Betty. A Celebration of Life service life will be held May 23, 2015 at the Royal Crest Mobile Home Park clubhouse (time TBA). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Breast Cancer Society or the Sequoia Humane Society. Before she died, Betty surrendered her heart and life to Jesus Christ. The last words she heard were from the Holy Bible in the Book of Psalms, chapter 23, verse 6: "Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever."
