David passed away April 9, 2014 at the age of 82. He was a resident of Fortuna, born in San Francisco on April 20, 1931. He was raised in Fortuna, graduated from Fortuna Union High School in 1948, and graduated from Humboldt State University in 1952.
He married his wife Joan in 1952. He was employed by Simpson Timber Company for 30 years. The first several years Barney was in the Arcata area, and later he managed operations in Southern Chile and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta. Upon his retirement he became known for the wonderful original carved Santa’s that he created. He is survived by his wife Joan of 62 years; his daughter Karen and her children, Kris Taylor, Molly Taylor Morgan and her husband Matthew Morgan, and Kate Purcell; his son Mark and his wife Carole and their daughter Sarah; his sister Pat Hartwell and her husband Jerry Hartwell; several cousins, nieces, and nephews, and two very special great grandsons, Dylan and Oscar Morgan.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dave and Ruth Elking. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the United Methodist Church in Fortuna; Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Barney's name may be made to the charity of your choice.
