Edward Jasper Hill

Edward Jasper Hill, a resident of Fortuna, California, passed away on September 22, 2014 in Fortuna at age 87.
Ed was born September 27, 1926 in Eureka, California to Edward and Hazel Hill and was a life-long resident of Humboldt County, descending from the pioneer Hill, Roscoe, Anderson and Case families. He and his family moved from Fortuna to the family ranch in Hydesville in 1935 and he graduated from Hydesville Elementary School and Fortuna High School. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he graduated from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. He married Diane Devereux on August 13, 1955 and they were blessed with three sons and a daughter, eight grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.
After working in the logging industry for a short time, Ed became a licensed land surveyor in 1964 and surveyed throughout Humboldt County. Later, he went to work for Cal-Trans, working in the Construction and Right-of-Way Engineering Departments, retiring as a land surveyor supervisor in 1995. Ed served on the Board of Directors of the Hydesville County Water District for 20 years. Ed always enjoyed traveling and he and Diane were involved in many church ministries through the years both at home and abroad.
A fifth-generation Humboldt County resident, Ed is survived by his loving wife, Diane; his children Dan Hill (Sherry) Parma, ID; Steve Hill (Alice) Mariposa; Mark Hill (Natalia) Hydesville; Becky Gallup (Doc) Longwood, FL and sister Barbara Hill of Eureka. He is also survived by grandchildren Jason Hill, Jessica Braatz, Jenny Rudd, Marcos Hill, Haley Hill, Heidi Gallup, Reese Gallup, Grant Gallup and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Hazel Hill and sister, Virginia Bornemann.
A private graveside service for family will be held on Saturday, September 27, which would have been Ed's 88th birthday.
Friends are invited to gather at Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer, 1431 Ross Hill Road, Fortuna, to visit with family on Sunday, September 28, anytime between 2:00 -3:30 p.m.
