Emma May Stroup

Emma May “May” Stroup died March 13, 2014, at the age of 97. She was born on July 24, 1916, near Shingletown, Shasta County, CA, to Fred and Vivian Hootman. She was raised near Shingletown and graduated from high school in Anderson; on February 6, 1937, she and Herb Stroup were married. They had two children and lived in Redding, Marysville, Linden, San Francisco and Willows; they settled in Fortuna in 1971. May spent more than 30 years in Fortuna with Herb and another 12 after he died. She was active in the Rebecca Lodge for many years and served as a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 25 years. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed time with friends and family; she also enjoyed knitting, fishing, and time at her ranch near Shingletown. She is survived and greatly missed by her daughter, Florence (Mike); son, Robert; grandchildren, Karen (Denis), Lisa (Don), Kris (Dale), Tabitha and Jennifer (Nello); 7 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Herb, in 2001 and by her oldest great granddaughter, Kendra Joiner, in 2012. A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 10:00 am at Sunrise Cemetery, 3315 Newburg Road, Fortuna, CA 95540. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Miranda’s Rescue Facility, 1603 Sandy Prairie Road, Fortuna, CA 95540. May liked to take shredded paper for the cages and to watch the dogs and cats play. Arrangements under the care of Goble’s Fortuna Mortuary, Fortuna, Ca.
