Filomena Barcelos Obituary

Filomena Barcelos passed away on August 31, 2014 at Sequoia Springs in Fortuna. She was born Filomena Santos Freitas on October 17, 1921 in Azores Portugal. She was one of 15 children. She married Antonio Barcelos and came to the United States to care for him and his two sons, Demos and Tony Jr. They settled in Rio Dell and then after the 1964 flood moved to Alton where she stayed until she could no longer live alone. Filomena's family was everything to her. She was a loving wife, mother, granny, homemaker and an amazing cook and accomplished seamstress. Her Portuguese sweet bread was second to none. She took great pride in her crocheting, quilting and needlepoint and loved giving her homemade pot holders and dish cloths as gifts. In her younger years, Filomena worked hard to raise her boys while helping on the ranch and in their massive garden. She must have created thousands of garlic braids over the years! Filomena treated guests or anyone working on the ranch to hearty, scrumptious, rib sticking meals. Most of the food was provided from beef, pork, chicken and vegetables grown right on the ranch. Those who didn't eat several helpings would be accused of being skinny and unhealthy. She was very generous, accepting, compassionate and deeply religious. She struggled many years with health issues and would sometimes say that she hoped Jesus did not forget about her. Jesus did not forget and called her home and we hope it is everything she dreamed it would be. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Filomena was preceded in death by her husband Tony, her mother, father, 12 siblings, and a grandson. She is survived by two brothers Elmer and Manuel; her sons Demos (Debbie) and Tony (Lori); granddaughter Tracie (Garyn); grandsons Trevor (Jessie), Kalen and Colton; and great-grandchildren Damien, Mahayla and Auvanie. Filomena loved her family and had special pride and joy for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind other relatives too numerous to name here. The family would like to thank Sequoia Springs, Redwood Memorial Hospital and Hospice for caring for Filomena and making her final days comfortable. A special thanks to cousins Ademar and Victor for assisting with contacting family. Friends and family, please join us at the Goble's Mortuary at 560 12th Street in Fortuna for a Rosary at 7:00pm, Thursday, September 4th (doors open at 5:00). A mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 14th and N Streets in Fortuna at 10:00am Friday, September 5th followed by a graveside service and burial at Sunrise Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ademar Frietas, Gene Demello, Trevor Barcelos, Kalen Barcelos, Colton Barcelos and Garyn Broussard.
