Gladys Lillian Ward passed away September 29, 2013 in Fortuna and went to be with Jesus, her Lord and Savior with her daughter, Connie, at her side. Gladys was born in New Underwood, South Dakota on May 2, 1927 to William and Nellie Shrull. She married Theodore Ward on June 30, 1946 in Rapid City, SD. Gladys and Ted homesteaded a ranch near Rapid City for six years before moving to Rio Dell in 1951. They moved to Fortuna in 1990. Gladys was a mother, grandmother, caretaker, housekeeper and volunteer. She loved to cook for her family especially during the holidays. Sunday dinners always consisted of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob and apple pie. Gladys loved gardening, crocheting, photography, cooking and volunteering at Redwood Memorial Hospital where she was a Pink Lady for over 15 years.
When her three children were young, the family all traveled to South Dakota every few years to visit relatives. When her husband of 44 years retired, they made many trips throughout Washinton, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Montana, Oregon and California.
Surviving relatives include children, Wanda (Jerry) Boyett, Connie Ross and Ted (Bonnie) Ward. Grandchildren, include Kevin Whipple, Daniel Ross, Heather (Peter) Starick, Randy (Kristina) Boyett, Jill and Jennifer Tollast. Great grandchildren include Brian Whipple, Meagan Starick, Jada Boyett, Peter Starick, Matthew and Michael Ross, Aiyana Boyett and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Theordore, (December 8, 1990.) Viewing will be on Friday October 4, 2013 from 12 to 4pm at Gobles Mortuary, 560 12th Street in Fortuna. Casket bearers include Kevin Whipple, Randy Boyett, Daniel Ross and Peter Starick.
Private family services will be Saturday morning. A celebration of Gladys' life will be at Wood Street Chapel, 1649 Wood Street, Fortuna, on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 2pm.
