GLORIA BARNWELL Gloria Barnwell was an amazing woman with a great life. Born April 21, 1929, she passed away April 23, 2016. Gloria was raised the youngest of 8 siblings on a fruit and vegetable farm under the largest black walnut tree in the world at Camp Grant. She walked the railroad tracks to Dyerville elementary school. She attended Holmes Flat elementary school so her sister Louise Paine had enough students. Gloria graduated from South Fork High School. Gloria and Philo Barnwell were married on April 30, 1947. They made their home on Chalk Mt. Ranch, ranching, logging, and hunting while raising six children and many nephews, nieces and wayward souls. Gloria devoted her life to Philo, family, friends and Chalk Mt. Ranch, managing and building a great reputation for her cattle herd and her Morgan horses. She was a fantastic seamstress, making matching outfits for Bridgeville school baton twirlers, Cowbell horse teams, many wedding dresses and gowns for her children, and friends. She sewed her children's clothing, many matching shirts and dresses for holidays. But the sewing we will all remember are the numerous and beautiful quilts, too many to count, for family and many friends. These quilts are amazing works of art. She dearly loved her Morgan horses. Starting with Big Rock, a 1965 champion. She eventually sold stallions to Canada and New Zealand where there is a long line of Chalk Mountain Morgan's. This legacy lives on in her daughter Crystal Johnston. Gloria was instrumental in forming the Chalk Mt. Endurance Trail Ride. Always an advocate for property rights, timber and agriculture, Gloria was a member and held offices in many organizations, including Cattlewomen, Cowbells, and Farm Bureau. She was also a member of Women in Timber, the Republican Party, a true patriot, and the Tea Party. She made many trips to Sacramento and Washington DC, speaking personally and testifying before committees for Agriculture and Forestry causes. Gloria was also involved in, and volunteered many hours with 4-H and FFA groups, Jr. Livestock Auction, and supported many youth agriculture activities. Gloria was preceded in death by her beloved husband and partner Philo Barnwell, who she greatly missed these past 6 years. She was also predeceased by her parents, Frank L. and Mary Edith Read, her seven siblings, Frances Boswell, Henrietta Finlayson, Louise Paine, Beverly Dougherty, Valerie Malone, Mary Paine, and Frank Read Jr. She is survived by her six children, Maryliz (Steve) O'Connell, Les (Janet) Barnwell, Rindy Samuelson (partner Mike), Henry (Debi) Barnwell, Crystal (Jim) Johnston, and Linda Kay (Harry) Papadakis. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, at least one more on the way, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of Gloria's life on July 2, 2016 with a BBQ from noon till 5 at the Ranch.Gloria's preferred charities were the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Dept., P. O.
