In loving memory of Helen Overholt, who went to be with her husband on December 9, 2013. Helen was born on July 31,1924 in College Corner, Ohio to Ben and Virginia Music. She was a graduate of Reily High School and graduated as a Registered Nurse from Christ Hospital of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton, Ohio and at Scotia Hospital in Scotia, California. While working in Scotia she met Orval Overholt, an Army Air Corps veteran and they were married in 1948. Helen started her volunteer career in 1954 working in various capacities with the Parent-Teachers Association and the Girl Scouts of America. She received the "Life Service Award" from the PTA and the "Thanks" badge from the Girl Scouts. She was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society from 1968-1980 serving as a committee member and chairman of the Public Education Committee. Helen started her Boy Scouts of America career in 1958 as a Cub Scout Den Mother and remained active for over 50 years. Helen's Scouting involvement spanned all levels from unit leader to Scout Camp Nurse, Commissioner, Chairman and Executive Board member on the Council level. She was a staff and chair committee member of Cub Scout Day Camps and Cub Scout Wood Badge training at the Region level. Helen also served as a member on several committees at the National level. Together, Helen and Orval attended many Boy Scout National meetings across the United States. One of her fondest memories was to be with Orval on the 1980 Cub Scouting 50th Birthday Tour to England. Helen was the recipient of several Boy Scouts of America awards which included the Den Mother's award, the Den Leader Coach award and the District Award of Merit. She received the Silver Fawn, the highest award a council can give in 1971 and received the Silver Antelope award, the highest regional award a volunteer can receive in 1983. Helen was a member of the Rohnerville Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed playing "bridge" with the local club.
Helen is survived by her sister, Betty Updike and her husband Leroy of Brookville, Indiana; her brother Bill Music and his wife Sarah of Medina, Ohio; her son, Chip Overholt and his wife Glenda of Fortuna; her grandson Skip Overholt and his wife Sara of Fortuna and her great-granddaughter Sydney Overholt of Fortuna. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Orval, her parents Ben and Virginia Music, her brother Robert Music, and her son, Rich Overholt.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 in the Chapel at Ocean View Cemetery, Eureka, California at 10:30 A.M.
