Janice Arleen Henderson Sights went to heaven on January 17th 2014 in Fortuna, CA, just two miles from where she was born on April 4, 1944 (4-4-44). She was born to Leonard and Thelma Reed Henderson and grew up on the Dunn Ranch between Bridgeville and Blocksburg.
Her childhood was quite adventurous, she was always exploring the creeks, rocks, mountains, trees, wild flowers, riding her horses, first Polly then Sugarplum. She loved to read, and was known to take her book with her and read it while milking the milk cow out on the hillside where ever the cow happened to be. She carried scars on her arms from a bear hug from the family pet. As the bear playfully grabbed her, she was startled and pulled way resulting in gashes from its claws. She and Sugarplum spent many summers in the Buck Mountain-Swayback area with her childhood friend, Georgie and her parents. Those two girls really had some adventures and experiences riding their horses to the Lassics, Hettenshaw and all the rock, lakes, and other nooks and crannies which they explored.
Janice graduated from Bridgeville Elementary School and Fortuna Union High School then when to Humboldt State where she earned her L.V.N. certificate. She worked several summers for CDF as a lookout on Iaqua, Bald Hills and Grasshopper lookouts. She worked at General Hospital during her training and for some time after.
In 1971 she married the love of her life, Richard Sights and began a new adventure. They lived in Orleans and she worked at the Hoopa Hospital, they lived in Covelo, Carson City Nevada, and Indianapolis Indiana where Rick was born and raised. Janice worked in a hospital there until their daughter Bridie was born in 1977. Several years later they moved back to California and Janice worked at Redwood Memorial Hospital until her retirement.
Through the years Janice began developing her beautiful flower garden and after her retirement the garden really blossomed. She spent countless hours in the yard enjoying every minute of what seemed to some to be hard work. To her it was her fun and recreation and she loved to share this beautiful, peaceful garden with all of her wonderful friends and family.
Rick passed away just days before Bridie graduated from grammar school, and Janice, as usual, did an outstanding job of providing the love and support for Bridie through her high school activities and Jobs Daughters activities. As Bridie married and the granddaughters, Erica and Erin, came along, she traveled to the bay area often to be with the family that was so precious to her. Three years ago they moved to Eureka and that gave them more time to be together and she was able to attend more of their activities. She was faithful in visiting her mother, sharing and comparing their gardens and looking out for her needs. It was important to her to go to the ranch and share family and traditions with her family.
Janice has joined her husband Rick Sights, her father Leonard Henderson, brother-in-law Joe Fahl, niece Brenda Grant, nephew Mike Black, and has left behind her daughter; Bridie (Jason) Hansen, granddaughters Erica and Erin, mother Thelma Hoopes, sisters Bonnie Grant and Georgie Short-Fahl, brother-in-law Mike Sights; niece Tammi Grant, nephew Dallas Grant and his sons Dustin (Erin) and Dillion (Jessie & Emma). Janice enjoyed a special relationship with her son-in-laws family as well, leaving behind Jasons father Gary Hansen (Marleen), mother Linda Ayers, Sister Julie Gaspar (Jose Rameirez), and their children Benjamin, Adam, and Samuel Gaspar and Elizabeth Hansen-Rameirez, and Grandmothers Lois Hansen and Lois Cates.
She also leaves some very special friends; Linda and Craig Wilkinson, Jennifer Johnson and Kylee, Susan Sanguinetti, Teri Hurd, Cindy Cowell, Brigid Young, Eric Nikolaus and her little Yorkie best buddy and friend Jack.
