Mary Teresa Alameda (Nunes), 92, of Fortuna, was born at home on her parents dairy farm in Beatrice, CA January 16, 1921 and passed away peacefully December 2, 2013 of natural causes.
Mary grew up during the depression and was the oldest of five siblings: Tony, John, Ernest and Dervalina. She went to elementary school in a one room schoolhouse which is now the Swiss Hall. Later she went on to study at the Eureka Business College, graduating in 1939 and beginning a career as a bookkeeper for Humboldt Creamery. On January 22, 1950 she married Joseph G Alameda. When her first child Debra was born she stopped working and became a housewife and a mother. Her second child Jeffery was born in 1958. Mary was a hard working, loving woman with strong Portuguese values and traditions. Throughout her life Mary was very active in the community including: St Joseph Catholic Parish, president of the Alter Society, Catholic Daughters, St Joseph Catholic School, and a member of the SES Lodge (PFSA). Foremost, dedication to family and friends was her calling in life. She was always modest, many times private and never wanting much fanfare. However, one funny and unique gift of Mary's was her ability to win raffle and door prizes, especially at church functions. Many times you would hear, What Mary Alameda won again!
Mary loved her time spent with her dear friend Emily Bryant catering and just chumming around. They were lifetime friends. Mary helped Emily with countless weddings, dinners, and events. The times spent making sandwiches at the Humboldt County racetrack during the fair were her favorite.
Mary is survived by her daughter Debra Therese Thompson and grandchildren Jaime Thompson and Brianna Thompson, of Fortuna; Makenzie Alameda, of Rohnert Park; Chase Alameda and daughter-in-law Marilyn Alameda, of Rio Dell. Additionally, Mary is survived by her brother-in-laws Tony Alameda, of Willows; Buzz Weis, of Petaluma; and sister-in-laws Mary Miranda, of Rio Dell; and Nellie Nunes, of Arcata; as well as a large extended family.
