Silas Dewell Obituary

Silas Campbell Dewell passed away in the early morning hours on January 3, 2014 at his home in Rio Dell with his loving wife Rena at his side.
Silas had battled with the complications from Cerebrovascular Disease for many years.
Silas was born on August 19, 1933 in Louisville Mississippi. He moved to El Sobrante, California at age 10 in 1945. In 1946 he moved to Fortuna and made his new home and attended both Elementary and High School in Fortuna.
Silas went to work for The Pacific Lumber Company in 1953 driving a "Carrier" moving lumber from one place to another. He eventually transferred to the town carpenter crew and that was where he realized his real love and talent. After many years in that position he obtained his General Building Contractor Licensee and left Palco in 1979. He was known for his quality work and had a fine reputation of quality in everything he did.
Silas found great comfort and joy spending time with his family fishing the upper Mad River with his Fly Rod and "Balls of Fire" bait. He had the same pair of homemade cut-offs and sneakers for most of his adult life that he had to wear while fishing the Mad.
Silas is preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Gatlin Dewell, His mother, Opal Sarah Dewell, His father, Ben W. Dewell, brothers James Dempsey and Malcom Dempsey. A niece, Karen Jewell and also two very special friends, Larry Dickerson and Harvey Stone.
He is survived by his loving wife Rena of Rio Dell, sons Chris Dewell of Littleton, Colorado and Ron Dewell of Fortuna. He leaves behind brothers Richard Dempsey of Crystal Springs, Mississippi, Floyd Dempsey of Dayton, Nevada, Boyd Dempsey also of Dayton, Nevada, Sister Esther Clark of Silver Springs, Nevada and niece Kim Clark also of Silver Springs, Nevada. Grandchildren Treavor, Uriah, Kane, Cameron and Kristen Dewell all of Fortuna. Jaclyn McCarty and Jessica Johnson of Rio Dell. Brother in law Patrick Noonan and wife Victoria of Miranda. Also a very special friend, Red Elliott of Rio Dell who showed extreme care and friendship.
At his request, Silas was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Sunrise Cemetery in Fortuna.
The family would like to say thank you to Dr. Donald Baird for his friendship and care of Silas for over 37 years, the staff at Redwood Memorial for their care and a very special thanks to the entire Hospice of Humboldt staff.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be given in his memory to Hospice of Humboldt, 2010 Myrtle Ave, Eureka California.
