When a loved one in your immediate family passes away, you may have the right to claim financial aid from the government. If your loved one was a veteran and is being buried in a national or private cemetery, he or she may be entitled to burial benefits. These benefits may include an allowance to help cover burial, funeral, and transportation costs, a government issued headstone or marker, a flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. Even if your loved one is being cremated, he or she has the right to burial benefits. Cremated remains are inurned in national cemeteries with the same honors as casketed remains.

The preferred method of establishing eligibility is the DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Dusty. If the DD Form 214 is not available, any discharge document showing other than dishonorable service can be used. The DD Form 214 may be obtained by filling out a Standard Form 180.

Benefits are not paid automatically. You need to apply for them. To place a claim for veteran’s benefits you must have paid for your loved one's burial or cremation, you can either apply online, or apply by mail using VA form 21P-530.
